"Wanted to say hello. Someone asked me for an article on Rio and I pointed them in the direction of the ABC's of Brazil. Hope that's cool. I'm not making any money from it if they use it but I've requested that you get a by-line credit.
You do realize you rock! Hope everything is going well. What are you up to?

Please contact me because part of my foundation's aims are with HIV/Lack of Information Technology which surprisingly has to do with my interest in bamboo ...
Next month I will be in India for the World Bamboo Congress. Will you be around there?
Cheers

Hi you worth many Trekstars. The only reason for not giving stars to all of your pictures is that they are all SO GOOD. I thought I was looking at at a National Geographic's photo album ! Your trip to Africa is great. Also Brazil is good. You seem as you choose to take specific kind of pictures depending on the place you visit; sometimes you focus on landscapes and play with light conditions some other times you focus on people or fruits. I do not know which kind is your favourite.
Take care

That is a titanic whinge a whinge of the magnitude and variety which from my experience can only be inspired by spending too much time in Ethiopia or by getting a Bryan Adams CD from your Aunt for your birthday. I'm interested to know whether you'll miss the place like I do in a couple of weeks or whether this is just because I'm a boofhead.
I can't believe some of the things men said to you on the street - you've opened up a whole new world of ways in which Ethiopia can be infuriating that I never knew existed.
I got kicked out of the Addis Hilton. I was running out of money and had been assured by a teller that I could do a visa cash advance in a local bank - the next day I was refused and I returned to my (cheap) hotel to find my travel companion had spent most of his money on silver coptic crosses expecting me to return with a bundle of birr. The day after I loitered in the Hilton reception pestering people in suits thus: 'Pssst hey buddy are you staying here?' 'Erm yes' 'what do you say to this - I'll pay for your room tonight with my credit card and you can just give me the cash' - I guess it was surprising I lasted as long as I did.
I'm also planning to decamp from Africa and get to Brazil - not until the end of the year - I know nothing about Latin America and like a certain Mr Quayle I can't even speak Latin so expect a list of questions at some point (from me not Dan).
cheers

Dear Paul-
I'm totally in agreement as far as the lack of euphony of the word 'faranj' goes and I think my latest travelouge makes it clear just how likely it is that were I biking through Ethiopia I would have had a reaction similar to yours upon reaching the Kenyan border.... that is if the dysentry had left me with enough energy to do anything as exciting as bike or jump up and down.
Yours in love of injera and loathing of 'faranj'

Alright you made it to Ethiopia - I don't know if reading your travelogues and looking at your photos will be healthy for me or not you're probably just going to make me yearn to go back there.
The last time I left Ethiopia I punched the air and hugged any Kenyan immigration officials within reach screaming 'I love you Kenya' (for reasons which I'm sure you'll discover if you haven't already and 'faranj') - I don't mind being called a white wherever I go in foreign lands my only judgement being on the musicality of the local word for whitey and faranj has got to be one of the worst it just grates it sounds like a fungal infection. But only a few weeks after crossing into Kenya I found myself missing the place - it seems a bit of Ethiopia will always be with me or maybe that just is a fungal infection.
Well I'll look forward to reading about your experiences (and you injera pics) - just keep in mind you may be tormenting me

Brazil calling

Here is a public posting so you don't forget to answer: I need to know what you want to do when you come back to Brazil.
As much as I love deciding what to do five minutes before leaving we need to plan because you will only be here for two weeks. :(
Denise is coming from NY either on late May or June but will be here until the end of July. Needless to say she Ana and Chico have requested our presence in Rio.
Options:
1. Go to Rio and stay there ($)
2. Go to the Northeast ($$$)
3. Go to Rio for the weekend then travel wherever you want to go to ($$$$) - I know you want sun so read next
You are going to arrive in So Paulo correct? Do you even want to stay here? Even though cooking in my kitchen is super fun July will be winter and I know your objective is to toast that pretty ass in the sun.
- Rio according to my research is sun-bathable in winter but I don't trust my source because she doesn't do that (Ana). We could go there to meet the girls and visit our favourite places (Arpoador Bofetada Madame Vidal etc ;-) ) then travel to a sunnier place if it is not hot enough for you there.
- The Northeast is expensive specially in July but I'm game if you want to go. You hated Salvador so I imagine you would like a place that was less tourist-oriented. Espirito Santo may be the answer. I will look into it. Macei is awesome in terms of beaches but will bore us to death as there is nothing else to do. City girls are hard to please.
Regardless of this tell me what you want!
muitos beijos

"Hey-
Thanks for writing me back in what...November? Sorry I didn't get back to you either-I kinda wandered away from Trekshare for awhile (very busy). I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your site-especially reading about your trip working with a bunch of baptists as a ""super-out Jewish dyke"". Nice to see some other family on Trekshare. Also I love meeting Jewish people. I have a fascination with Jewish history and love hearing the Jewish point of view.
I do have some more rugby pics up along with some other trips. I haven't uploaded any good drinking pics because I know my mom can get on this site ya know?

Cool by association...
03-Mar-2003
|
...is basically the feeling I get communicating and posting in this cyber land. Confession no I am not cool nor will I ever reach the status of the cool kids in the cafeteria from using TrekShare but I am confident that I have reached some status of cool. Proof? Wonderfully bright and charming travelers like yourself actually take a minute and read nonsensical ramblings I scribe after many cocktails. Thank you again for taking the time to share such beautiful photogrpahy and candid travel tales. Warm regards Katie ps- You are doing it right for I know many that think you are cool. :)

I actually have a tale of humble pie from Ethiopia - the first time I travelled there I crossed overland from Kenya with another backpacker from the States - we had never encountered Ethiopian food before so when we were served our plate of injera that night we picked the meat and sauce off the top of the bread thinking it was some sort of cloth (this despite me having read about injera looking like a sponge several days earlier) - after a few strange looks the waiter eventually summoned the courage to come over and tell us that we were supposed to eat that strange grey foamy thing underneath the meat - and so we ate it minus sauce (not recommended). At least you can look forward to some decent vegetarian food if you make it to Addis. Ill look forward to those sarcastic remarks. Paul
