Trip - Pakistan by dromogirl
Gilgit
Our Journey to Gilgit continues the next day at 6.00am in a more comfortable vehicle -a bus. It was yet another 14 hours journey passing through beautiful mountain ranges and valleys, including Shandur pass at about 4,000 m which has 2 small lakes and a big polo ground, the highest in the world.

We also passed by Phandar valley with fresh water lakes and famous for rivers to fish in. ..along the torrential gilgit river.

About 6.00pm, we arrived at GILGIT.. another city along Karakoram Highway. Ugly city with many bazaars and snow capped mountain surrounding it. And it is HOT.

We met the first Malaysian Male Traveller named Tan. A plumber who is an avid traveller since the 70s and have been through Pakistan 3 times and to Afghanistan.

Together with him and a Korean guy, we rallied a trekking group to Fairy Meadows (Diamir) and Nanga Prabat Base camps the day after.

What we did in Gilgit?

Saw Kargha Buddha - rock wall painting dated back on 6th AD-what you see in the post card is what you get..

Walked around the villages pearched at the surrounding mountain with volunteer boy as guide pass through corn field. We saw grapes growing on trees and chilldren playing walnuts, using them as marbles. From there, it is a good viewpoint to see the whole of smallish Gilgit town, while chewing the grapes plucked from the trees courtesy of th locals.. .. nice people!
