Staying in Phuket would not be complete for golfer without playing one of the lush golf courses. It would seem all one would have to do is plant the grass in a matter of months, viola, there would be course the weather is so perfect. Christine and myself got a very early tee time to beat the rush and the humidity and accomplished one out of two. We had the course to ourselves with our 6:30 a.m. tee time but the humidity of the wet course was ever-present. We played the Phuket Century Country Club which was a challenge with the water and the sand on every hole.
We had female caddies who only gave yardage and assisted on the green when asked to do so at the start of the round. It was fairly early when we teed off so maybe they were still half asleep. My caddy was great after a few holes when she began to be more talkative with distances to the green and reading the greens. However, Christine?s caddy only spoke when her ball was headed for the ?sandtrap? or ?water.? Other than those two words, she could have been a dead ringer for a walking corpse in a caddy outfit.
The Phuket Century golf course basically belonged to us all day, as there was hardly anyone out on the course during the mid-week. This course was carved out of the lush hillside and provided some dramatic holes that were quite challenging. The majority of the holes on the par 72 course had water that came into play. Course management was a priority and this was a challenge with the rented clubs.
Since you have to walk the entire course when you play at the Phuket Century, there is a mini pickup truck that you have to ride in the back of on a few holes to ride to the next tee box it is so far away. It was a little unusual to pile into the back of a truck during the round but after a while it was a refreshing break. On one of the rides between holes the driver handed us a cold, wet towel with a fragrance that still waffles threw my mind every time I think about our round.
I shot an 81 and Christine had a few more than that, but overall the round was pleasant but humid. That is to be expected during that time of the year inland on lush ground. However, the greenery and the challenge of playing the Phuket Century golf course offset it all. The cost of playing the course was 1200 Baht which was around 27 USD while the club rental and shoe rental (if so desired) was 470 Baht or about 10.50 USD. The caddie fee was 150 Baht which translated into 3.50 USD, however Christine and I gave them a tip to make up for all the work they did tracking down our errant shots. They were genuinely pleased when the round was complete and I was amazed at how petite women could carry a full golfbag in that humidity while wearing a pant outfit with a jacket. They were in much better shape than I was and we appreciated there efforts during the round.
