Trip - Fiji by omnisrex
May 1 2003 Roughin it and Lovin it
Got up rather early in part because of the sunlight coming into the dorm and in part due to the drums announcing breakfast. Stumbled out of bed tried the shower which wasn't as horrible as I thought since I only used a half bucket of water. I still hate cold showers. I got some breakfast which consisted of toast, cereal some fruit and coffee/tea.

Laura, Kate and Linda were already up and I sat with them to have breakfast and enjoy the view of the warm tropical beach. A little later I joined the volleyball game which was delightfully bad. I find that the secret to enjoyable games is not when the players are good but when everyone sucks. Then I can concentrate on actually enjoying the game and having fun rather than the technical aspects. We were playing on the level of just get the bloody ball back over the net without being distracted by strategy or setting or even hitting the ball less than three times. Ladies got a second try if they messed up their first serve. The slightest bit of extra effort, accidentally actually providing a good set for the ball or even a rally that went more than four volleys was cause for celebration. Kicking the ball back over the net was perfectly acceptable. Nobody was criticized for hitting the ball wrong. It was great and we played four games.

After that I sat in a hammock with Gary until lunch. There is a strange energy sucking effect when lying in a hammock on a beautiful tropical beach. We became strangely incapable of doing anything. The snorkeling trip came and went. The fishing trip aroused no interest. It was only when lunch was announced and we realized how hungry we were that we managed to get out of the hammock.

A bunch of day trippers showed up. They had paid FJ$79 for a daytrip out to the island. Seemed a bit of a poor deal since we were paying FJ$65 to spend the night. They had with them a bunch of kids but we just generally ignored them and they left us alone.

The afternoon went by in a blur. Gary and I sat on a fallen tree, letching at lovely young 18-22 year old European girls sunning themselves in their oh so small bikinis like the two old men were. While watching the girls we had an interesting discussion on exactly how immoral it would be if Gary got involved with one of these girls who were actually younger than his daughter and whether it would be worth it. I tried to do some writing and failed miserably. I borrowed a fire twirling stick and tried to do some twirling myself with the unlighted stick with some degree of success while Gary returned to nap on the hammock. Laura, Kate and Linda continued to lie in the sun. Linda is in pretty good shape for a thirty something woman.

I was hungry and we sat waiting for dinner. Dinner came and tonight it was some sort of curry thing. Not bad but the lamb from the night before was better. Watch the newbies go through the Kava ceremony and then another dancing show but with no fire twirlers. I stayed up later and joined the dancing at the disco a bit until the disco shut down at 11:30 and then went to bed. The late night group went down the beach to the nightly bonfire. It is amazing how tiring it is to laze around a tropical beach all day long.
