Right as you walk into the Pompeii Scavi (excavation) you see this alter and pillar. In the background you can see Mt Vesuvius which is the only active volcano on the European continent. It errupted in 79 AD and buried the town on pompeii in ashes. The excavation began in 1784 and has unearthed and entire Roman city. It was amazing to see everything in front of you that was nearly 2000 years old.
